Portland ranks 12th for Energy Star buildings

Portland ranks 12th in the nation for Energy Star’s annual ranking of top 25 UFactorThe factor representing resistance to heat flow of various building materials..S. cities with the most Energy Star labeled buildings.
The list was ranked by number of Energy Star-rated buildings. Los Angeles topped the list with 293 Energy Star-rated buildings, 76 million square feet of floorspace, $93.9 million in cost savings, and prevented emissions equal to 34,800 homes’ electricity use.
Comparatively, Portland has 80 Energy Star-rated buildings, 13.6 million square feet of floorspace, $11.1 million in cost savings and prevented emissions equal to 7,600 homes’ electricity use.
Other cities in the top five are Washington D.C., San Francisco, Denver and Chicago.
The list is compiled each year by the Environmental Protection Agency, whose Energy Star program certifies buildings that meet strict energy performance standards. To qualify, a building or manufacturing plan must score in the top 25 percent based on EPA’s National Energy Performance Rating System, which compares energy use in similar types of facilities.
