Prices rise for construction materials

Construction material prices continue to increase, rising 1.3 percent last month, according to federal Labor Department statistics released today.

Iron and steel prices were up 5.1 percent; steel mill products, 3.4 percent; wire and cable, 4.2 percent; softwood lumber, 2.4 percent. Prepared asphalt, tar, roofing and siding were up 0.8 percent and concrete products were up 0.1 percent.

Oregon "Reaches" with new code

When it comes to cutting Oregon’s carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, building to the standard building code isn’t cutting it.

That’s why the Oregon Building Codes Division this month will begin developing the Oregon Reach Code, an optional building code that directs contractors to construct buildings significantly more energy efficient than under the present code.

New "Fuel Mileage" Label for homes

Energy Trust of Oregon has developed a new residential energy labeling system that allows buyers to compare the efficiency of homes in the same way that consumers compare the fuel efficiency of automobiles. Based on considerations such as a home’s size, level of insulation, HVACHeating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning. systems, lighting, and major appliances, the Energy Performance Score is calculated based on both energy consumption and carbon emissions, with low scores indicating the greatest efficiency.
